My husband and I often joke that it will be a miracle if our kids know their real names. We have always been the pet name kind of people (don’t gag just yet – apart from the regular sweetie and honey stuff, we do have silly names that we use too!)
I don’t know if it’s just us who always seem to play on words, sounds and variations of names but each of our kids are called various nicknames – all loving and fun but most make no sense.
We have some that are variation of their names and others that are just because. My son has been called Gus, Nug, Dude, Nuggy and so on. Baby girl is often baby girl, sweetie, others that sound like her name and one of my favs that my sister started ‘Big Blue’ (because of her big blue eyes!)
It’s all in good fun, and when we say the nicknames they seem to know who we mean. These are certainly terms of endearment. I wonder if one day they’ll want to know what we were thinking.
Also, a note to my husband: I don’t know why you called me ‘picklehead’ but that does not count as a romantic, sweet nickname.
