Giveaway has now ended – Congrats #30 chantal and #39 Claudia!
I was fortunate enough to be contacted by the owners of a children’s product distributer that is right here in Ottawa. Silly Pants distributes to the Canadian market some amazing toys and children’s items that are unique, special and safety tested.
They asked if I would like to review some products and do some giveaways for my readers. While I am asked this often, I only accept when it’s a product I think my family or readers will enjoy. A quick browse on their website secured that we’d be a good match.
For the past couple of weeks the kids and I have been using the Beatrix Little Kid Backpacks. The one my son choose is Percival. Yes, it has a name. Look at how adorable Percival is. But his good looks are only the beginning of why I like this product.
I’ve been putting this backpack to good use by taking it on day trips, outings and to and from the car. It’s held toys, clothes, books, and snacks on various occassions. Here are some of my observations:
It’s little, but huge
Before my son went to preschool in the fall I searched for the perfect book bag. He was too small for the huge backpacks that seemed to be everywhere. I wanted something smaller, but it was very hard to find. Even the Spiderman themed bags weren’t the right fit. Finally, with about 2 days until school, I found a small bag at H & M. It was $15. While that bag served it’s purpose, and fit him well, it didn’t hold much more than his lunch bag.
This is where the Beatrix bag really was different. It was wider, and opened up to become even bigger than most I’ve seen. It also had a sturdier frame, which meant it would sit open when placed on the floor. This makes things much easier for my son and I to put items in.
It stays clean
Most backpacks take a beating, and mine are no different. I throw them in the van. On the ground at the park. In the sand. Water leaks out of our container and so on. But to look at the bag, after 3 weeks of use, you’d hardly know it’s left the house.
Safety
These bags are PVC free, lead free, and phthalate free. After speaking with the distributor, he assured me that these products are heavily tested and Silly Pants only carries tested items (and he and his wife are parents who speak highly and passionately about their products) so I was more than satisfied.
Again, is it not adorable?
I’m usually the first to avoid the ‘cute’ factor, but the bag is just so sweet. There are a lot of different characters in the line (Nigel the Shark is one of my favourites) and there is a matching lunch bag. Guess what I’ll be buying come the school year?
If I could change one thing…
There is such little downside, but as a frugal shopper the price tag is my biggest hesitation. It retails for about $45 and the small one I got before was $15. But, this one is already holding up and lasting longer than the other one I bought. It isn’t too big for him, holds so much more (which means I use it instead of a diaper bag etc) and my daughter is already eyeing it. There are times when you pay for quality, and this is one of them. I love it enough I am going to buy the matching lunch kit when the time comes.
Still not sure of the price? Add it to your child’s birthday or Christmas list when family and friends are looking for fun ideas. Also, it would make a perfect ‘you’re going to school!’ gift for your little one.
Summary
It’s been a wonderful product. I leave it by the door and throw some diapers, snack and a change of clothes in it and out we go. I mostly can’t believe how much stuff it holds and how clean it still looks. A really well made product*

*After drafting this post the other day, the small clip that is in the front of the bag broke – I had attached a water bottle to it. I suspect it was just a matter of the right amount of pressure from the bottle getting stuck in the van. After contacting the distributor, who told me this hadn’t been reported before and offered to replace the bag, I suggested I will just try to sew it to save the bag. Up to that point, I had no problems attaching anything to the clip.
Since our entire family is based around a Monkey theme, how could I not love Dieter? I wonder if that’s a tip of the hat or a coincidence that there was an 80s SNL sketch (Sprockets) with a character named Dieter that had a pet monkey…
They’re all pretty cute, though!
I also subscribed, but with another email address that I use to aggregate my email subscriptions.

Thanks for including Raspberry Kids in your list of “where to find” Beatrix NY. We do carry a wide selection of Beatrix products including the Little Kid packs, Big Kid packs, eco-stroller tote, diaper totes, lunch boxes and we will soon be adding more.
We were one of the first retailers to carry Beatrix in Canada and absolutely adore the designs. My fave changes all the time but my current fave is Papar, mainly because my daughter will be going off to Kindergarten in September and I will be giving her a Papar Big Kid Pack to take with her.
If anyone has any questions regarding Beatrix NY products, please do not hesitate to get in touch and good luck in the contest everyone!

Oooh, these are so cute and my youngest would make excellent use of one at preschool next year. She looooves pink so I’d have to pick the bunny one for her.
We like Alister (on the lunch box) because he is so innocently and intently devouring his favourite leaves just like our son innocently devours his favourite foods. For the backpacks we like Percival and Fei Fei. My son would prefer Percival, but since he is taken, the robot would be nice too.
I LOVE the Papar one for my little girl! How cool!
I subscribe to your blog via email!
I am a fan of Baxter. To cute.
I’m torn between two. I like Nigel the Shark and Tuka the Bee.

I’ve polled my kids and the Alexander the Robot is our favourite character!
Tuka the Bee for my little princess – what amazingly cute backpacks!
My wife picked up the Rory one for our son from Raspberry Kids last year (he still roars aloud when he sees it), and we just had a little girl last September. She looks pretty in red so I think the JuJu one would suit her best. Thanks!
I love Esther and Juju and I think my girls would too. They are sweet little backpacks!
My little dude is starting preschool in the fall and I think he would look pretty cute sporting a Percival or Deiter bag!
YAH! THANK YOU! I’ve so very excited and the JuJu is perfect for my little Miss! I’ve replied to your email – thanks again.
