After the birth of our son, we took a much more serious look at our purchasing power, products we used in the home and what our family came in contact with on a daily basis.
It was soon after his birth that we started buying eco-friendly, non-toxic products including baby wash and lotions. We also changed our cleaning supplies – from harsh chemical ridden products (with strong smells that never made me feel good, but were convincing to feel ‘clean’) to non-toxic, greener options.
We had to do some research, and to be honest five years ago it was harder to find green options. Frankly, we had some missteps, thinking we were buying ‘green’ products that truly weren’t as natural as we wanted.
We tried to weed through the information to find more natural products or just used lemon, vinegar and baking soda for cleaning.
One of the first brands we switched to was Seventh Generation. Not every store carried it at the time, but we were really happy with the products we used. I signed up to receive updates from their newsletter and read about their research.
As the years passed, it became easier to find natural products and we’ve tried many to find ones that we like best. We have found other brands that we are happy with and continue to use Seventh Generation as well. It’s nice to finally have some real options in the stores (and in my cupboards).
I didn’t find the switch to non-toxic cleaners much more expensive or difficult, especially now that they are more readily available. Yes, I still use good old vinegar and baking soda for some cleaning, but it’s nice to have options.
When I had the chance to promote Seventh Generation for Mom Central, it seemed like a natural fit.

My tip is to walk more often. It is great for the environment and you will also save money and boost your health.
Use cloth instead of paper (towels, napkins, bags, diapers, wipes, etc.)
Sometimes I save the water from the shower to flush my toilet.
I just discovered a great way to clean my flat stovetop – sprinkle baking power and scrub with half of a lemon (the lemon becomes the scrubber!) Works so well, and is much nicer than that white goo in a bottle – who knows what’s in that!
Now that my oldest is in kindergarten I’m trying to find items to help with a litterless lunch. And if I can’t do that, I want to ensure the packaging is recycleable
We always exercise Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Simply turning off and unplugging electronics when not in use. We use Recyclable Bags when shopping and grocery. We use Environment Friendly products. We never use plastics containers 🙂

I recently started using mircrofiber cloths (my favorite is my Norwex one) for a lot of my cleaning. It does many jobs with just water. It even got spots out of my carpet that neither a steam cleaner or a carpet spray was able to do.
We use reusable container and sandwich wrap on our little ones school snack & lunch. We also encourage recycling.
