It’s no secret that I fight with the gym. I feel that I need to go, so sometimes I force myself to get there, but most of the time I take zero pleasure in it. I do it in full recognition that I want to keep on top of my heart health. So it’s less about weight training or strengthening exercises and all about heart/cardio health for me.
It wasn’t until I stumble upon squash while we were vacationing at Chateau Montebello in February that a light bulb seemed to go off. I’m at my happiest when working out/exercising during a sport of some sort. In university I played beach volleyball or outdoor activities with friends. As I had kids, the most fun we had was running around playing baseball/football/badminton with them.
So when Andy and I took to the squash court for a couple minutes of fun I should have known that I would love it. And I did. We decided immediately after that to look for local courts to go to. My parents agreed to watch the kids when we go and now we have a standing squash date each week.
We each have just enough competitive nature to make the sport challenging, and enough light heartedness that we laugh more than we fuss about form.
It’s definitely been fantastic for my cardio – I feel my heart pumping almost immediately after the game begins! I’m still sore for a couple of days after we play though!
Needless to say, this beats the gym hand down!
Do you and your partner work out together? Do you like spending time doing that?
What a great idea to find something you both love to do! My hubby and I try to get to the gym together – we’ll do a spin class or work out side-by-side on the cardio equipment. But a sport outside of the gym is even better – and your heart will thank you! 🙂
we are loving it! Missed it this week because of illness – can’t wait for next week!
