We just returned from a much needed family vacation. We spent a few days in Niagara Falls, one of our favourite family destinations, and then made our way to see my husband’s family in Windsor.
I almost completely disconnected, short of a few minutes on Twitter and updates to emails. But really, I didn’t pay much attention to what was happening online, or the work I was letting slide.
That was ok. It felt great to regroup and refocus. I’m happy to be back into our regular routine, and am happy to be working on a few new projects over the next little while. But disconnecting does a body good I think, and I’m happy to have done it.
Do you disconnect sometimes? Do you find it hard? (fyi: I DID miss the Twitter chatting 😉
When I go on summer vacation, I will check my emails in the morning – otherwise that’s it. I’m there and present to enjoy being around the family. And there are definitely nights where I completely step away from the computer just to give my mind a rest.
very hard for me to totally disconnect given my biz, but I severely curtail email etc. to specific blocks time – so important to focus on family!
I think you’re so right- it’s important to just unplug and reconnect with family or just take some down time. Sometimes I get this by going for a walk with the kids or just watching a show but of course a vacation is the ultimate unplug because you can tell everyone ‘I’m away for the weekend’.
Looks like a beautiful spot!
I disconnected (for the most part) over the Family Day long weekend. I did take a peek in at Twitter every once in a while but I was pretty much ‘off the grid’. It was really nice to just focus on family. My dad was in town visiting too so that was an added treat. 🙂
I find it really hard to disconnect, but sometimes it’s much needed.
I love Niagara Falls. Have you ever been to Buffelo? The outlets there are fantastic!
I am pretty bad at disconnecting since I got more into Twitter, and bought my netbook. I’m afraid to get a smartphone because I fear that I would never stop.
I think I would like to camp this summer though to really get away, because I agree with you that it is really important sometime. I’m glad you had a chance to get away!
Every now and then I back off of anything online, even when I’m still in town. Working fuill time I’m away from my family so much that I don’t want to get so caught up in twitter that I start to feel like I’m disconnected from them when we’re in the same room.
I’m so happy that you and your family finally got to get a break from your routine of the past several months. I’m sure DH’s family were delighted to see all of you and the kids must have enjoyed the Falls. Recently back from two weeks away myself, I did manage to disconnect everyday for most of the time save for a nightly post and morning tweet re my project blog. Being off Twitter for *extended* periods of time really made me feel out of touch.
