The winter season may still have a lot of uncertainty when it comes to activities in Ottawa; even the weather can be an issue! However, I know many people are still looking to pass the short winter days with some fun activities.
Maybe this is in person for your family (when things are open), or maybe it’s virtual if you are more comfortable that way.
The City of Ottawa is once again offering virtual activities and classes for kids and adults this winter. Currently, their in-person winter activities are delayed because of Covid in Ottawa, but you can sign up for their recreation newsletter to be notified as updates happen.
In the meantime, thevirtual activities you can register for, or you can browse their guide to make winter plans and register for when it’s available.
There are a lot to choose from, with a variety of interests for all ages. Here are a few from their guide that I wanted to highlight because I thought they looked interesting and fun!
For the kids:
Muck and Mess
For ages 3-6, this class will help guide the kids to use a variety of crafting materials to craft and create!
Digital and Visual Arts
There are several coding, gaming and designing virtual programs (for kids ages 9-14) available. Kids can learn how to make their own games, or create their own animation!
For your young artist, there is also a drawing and painting class, or a comic creation class!
Dance and Music
Dance classes begin for those aged 6 and older, or maybe the new guitar your child got for Christmas can be put to use with a guitar lesson!
LEGO Club
I know how much kids love LEGO, including LEGO robotics, so these online classes may be perfect for them to express their abilities and learn something new!
For the Adults:
Virtual Cooking Classes
There are so many cooking classes which I think sound so amazing, such as an entire series with the City of Ottawa Museums based on decades. Learn how to preserve and can food (1930s), or about food chemistry in the 1950s, as examples. You may also be interested in learning how to make chocolate (a supply kit will be available for pick up), or discover the new recipes and flavours at one of the other classes.
Want to improve your coffee making skills? Register for this March 6th event! Here’s the description from the website:
Getting bored with your morning cup of coffee? Learn
-City of Ottawa
about different brewing methods, roasts, and flavour
profiles from local coffee experts. It’s time to develop your
coffee palate! Supply kit included and will be available for
pickup. Requires a personal electronic device with internet
connection.
Fitness Classes
I know it’s been harder to get out for our little walks that so many of us were doing before and during the pandemic, so if you need a little help with motivation, check out one of the fitness classes being offered. There are also pilates classes and yoga.
Learn a new hobby
We are never too old to learn a new skill or take up a hobby like playing the guitar, drawing or painting.
Other classes to look for:
I noticed when browsing the collection of classes, there are ‘grandparent and grandchild’ classes that caught my attention. For $6.75, connect grandparents and grandkids for crafts, games and science experiments.
This winter, it can feel like everything is still closed or it’s hard to make plans to do something find. These virtual courses may be just what you need to step out of a winter slump and into a new experience – while staying warm at home!
