Win! Sobeys Gift Card Giveaway and tracking where you dinner came from

It’s time for another Sobeys gift card giveaway!

I had the opportunity to purchase the new Sensations by Compliments wild fish frozen packages.  They come in portions of two.

With the gift card we purchased the Halibut and the salmon.  Both fish are sustainably caught and are wild.  More information can be found on their website.

Each package has a numbered code on it and a QR code (very cool!) that when scanned brings me to the website (although it was a little tricky to read at first-mobile friendly? But once I select the province it was easier to read).  The site directs me to enter the numbered code and it tracks where dinner came from!

It’s really interesting to see where the fish was caught, the fisherman who caught it, how it was caught and the company who processed it.  How great is that?  I shared it on Twitter and others were able to see where my dinner was arriving from (both the salmon and halibut we had were from BC).

Since trying it we now keep it stocked in the freezer for easy, quick meals (you can find salmon and fish recipes on A Little Bit of Foodsense).

WIN!

Sobeys is generously giving readers a chance to win a $30 gift card so you can try them too!

To enter, simply leave a comment below and let me know where you go to find local food.  The market? Great grocery store? Your own garden? Share for a chance to win!

1-One entry per person

2-Open to Canadian residents only, excluding Quebec

3-Giveaway closes October 27, 2011 at 9 pm EST

Disclosure: I was given a Sobeys gift card to try out this product but now love it and have added it to my weekly grocery list! Opinions are my own

Our two local farmer’s market (Preston St. and Parkdale) are our first choices for produce. Parkdale has really improved… I love the fact that signs in all of the stalls now identify who is a local producer and who is just a distributor.

I go to our local farmers market every saturday mornings to stock up on my locally grown vegetables and meats. Whatever I can’t find there, I then pick up at the grocery store.

I rely largely on our grocery store but take full advantage certain times of the year when we can pick-our-own produce.

I get local food from our own garden throughout the summer months and eat the produce canned from our garden in the winter months.

I love supporting my local farmers market when I can’t get stuff from my own garden. I also have a great butcher shop down the block who makes me (just me…cus I asked nice) some of the best double smoked bacon I’ve ever had!

This past summer I discovered a great biodynamic farm just 1/2 hour outside Ottawa. We went there to pick apples, and I also ordered my free range turkey from them. Being able to know where your food comes from, and how it was raised, it so important to our family. Ever since I learned more about industrial farming, there has been a boycott in our household on all meats from the grocery store (unless we can trace it back to the farm and find out more about it). I’m happy to see that grocery chains are finally figuring tapping into the market of customers who care about the quality of their food!

I go to my backyard. You can’t get much more local than that! All summer long we enjoy fresh veggies picked up to the minute. Sometimes we go to Acorn Creek Farm for the veggies that we don’t grow.

We end up having to rely on the grocery store for whatever local food we can find. When we’re lucky, the neighbours’ gardens provide some fresh produce 🙂

Usually the grocery store. Or Farm Boy. Sometimes, we’ll stop by Abbeyhill Farms, a roadside market, for fresh carrots or tomatoes or apples, when they are in season. Nothing better.

I shop at the local farmer’s market as much as possible, grow some of our own veggies in our garden and also buy produce and baked goods at local farms and fruit stands.

During the warm weather, when the they are open, we visit the local farmer’s markets. Year round we patronize a small local grocers, where they make many products in house.

We grow a few things in our wee garden but mostly just veggies we snack on while we’re in the back yard – like cherry tomatoes and green beans. Otherwise, we look for the Foodland Ontario logo and shop the farmers markets.

I must be honest and say that I am time limited and only shop at one or two stores a week. I should make time for local markets in the summer/fall but I don’t. That being said I do look for local produce in my Superstore/Farmboy and chose it over imported (assuming the price difference won’t break my bank 😉 ).
