Save the Date: Folk for Families Concert in Ottawa

What you need to know: There’s a musical event for families happening on April 6. It’s free with your Canadian Museum of History admission. Keep reading for details.

When my kids were younger (very young), we enjoyed taking them to live events – performances, life music and so on. We did this as often as we could (sometimes, it was just to the mall!)

We loved introducing the kids to the arts in this way. Our family continues to enjoy live performances, especially music. And now that they are teens, they still enjoy music, musical theatre, plays and more. While I enjoy music, the rest of my family LOVES music, it’s on all the time around here or in someone’s headphones.

Folk for Families: You’re invited!

Do you want to introduce your kids to live music too? You’ll want to save the date and plan to attend the Folk for Families: Musical fun for everyone at the Canadian Museum of History. It’s a part of the Canadian Folk Music Awards.

Folk for Families concern is a part of the folk awards in Ottawa from April 3-6

The event is happening on April 6th, 2025 at the child-friendly hour of 10:30 am and is meant for the entire family. It will be happening in the Grand Hall (a gorgeous location!) right in the Museum.

Also, you should know that tickets are INCLUDED with your admission to the Canadian Museum of History so plan to have an entire family day outing in Ottawa.

Museum membership holders, this is just another bonus!

How your kids can have a creative March Break

March Break in the Ottawa area is quickly approaching, and if you are struggling with booking a camp for the kids, it may be time to check out the Nepean Creative Arts Centre and the Nepean Visual Arts Centre. Having a creative outlet for their week of March Break might be the perfect way for the kids to try something new, express themselves and connect with new friends.

Below I’ve listed a few sessions that I think would appeal to kids of different ages (they are for kids aged 6-11, depending on the course). At the time of writing this, I selected classes that still had space left (some other sessions that looked really great are already full, so if you miss out for March Break, remember that there will be summer camps offered too!)

I love that each one is a bit different but still creative. Hands-on art programming, dance, and theatre (including musical theatre!) might be just what your child hoped to do during their break. Some camps are four days, others are for the entire five-day week.

Drawing, Painting and Sculpture – kids aged 6-9

“Explore your imagination through scultpure, drawing and painting. Let your creativity flow as you use different techniques and materials to learn advanced methods and explore new skills.”

Urban Dance Camp, for kids aged 6-9

“This unique style of dance incorporates hip-hop, breakdancing, pop’n lock, and freestyle. Master the dance moves from each style in a fun and energetic class.”

Theatre Camp, for kids aged 7-11

“Camp meets arts collective. Expand your dramatic skills by exploring character development, voice, movement and performance techniques – while giving theatrical expression to your ideas. Performance on the last day in the theatre.”

“From act one to curtain call! Learn vocal techniques, singing, choreography, acting, and a Broadway-style song and dance.”

Dance, Art, and Performance and other creative courses await your family this Fall

Want to get creative this Fall and Winter? You’ll want to check out the NCAC and NVAC programs

What do you have planned for the Fall and Winter? Are there activities that the kids like to sign up for? If you want something new and interesting, for both the kids and yourself, check out the offerings from the Nepean Creative Arts Centre and the Nepean Visual Arts Centre.

Registration opens online on August 16 at 9pm, and in person on August 17.

I’ve written about the offerings from NCAC and NVAC before, and even attended some workshops. The Canvas and Cocktails (a wine and paint workshop) night was memorable and the Family Christmas decor workshop that the four of us did was so amazing I’m already planning to attend this year.

That’s one thing I love about the offerings at NCAC and NVAC. There are family workshops where everyone can get involved, there are some that just mom and dad can do (like Jazz night), others that just mom can sign up for with a friend or by herself to take up a new hobby.

You don’t have to go into most of these workshops with any creative skill ahead of time. If you love music or the arts and just want to become more hands on (like at a pottery course), these classes are one way you can engage in something new in a welcoming, professionally instructed environment.

Don’t forget that registration begins in the evening of August 16 online. Browse through the entire Fall 2017 and Winter 2018 catalogue to see which courses or special workshops might be of interest to members of your family, and register to avoid disappointment.

Rocking Out: What’s on Repeat on the Radio

So my house gets song obsessed. I think it’s something that both my husband and I have taught the kids (although, I blame Andy more because seriously, he plays an album over and over and over when it first comes out. Oh wait, I’ve done that too).

Satellite radio is on in the car and in the house a lot.  One of their most favourite activities is creating choreography for songs they love. 

But my kids listen to a lot of our music.  We try to keep it censored, and it’s radio edited but it’s contemporary.  And it’s a mix. I like the pop stuff, Andy is into the Rock stuff.

Both the kids end up with music love.  When my son was younger, he was obsessed with Stronger by Kanye West (seriously, I’m not getting parenting awards for this?) and a Timbaland song that we had to play on repeat when he was mad on road trips.

Seems my daughter has picked up the same trait and her and I are loving the new Fall Out Boy song.  Go ahead and play it and tell me you don’t want to dance or jump or work out or do something.

Me? I like to crank it and sing it loud.

Entering The Twilight Zone

I’ve written before about the hilarity that is my children.  They have the greatest sense of humours (to which I credit their father) and are very imaginative.

Take for instance the Dance Party that is a staple activity in this house.  Random dancing and when we are especially lucky, a fully choreographed lip sync concert.  Those are the best.

The dance party revolution that occurs in this house is so vital that when talking to our designer about the main floor plans, it was one way I described how we used the space.

Recently our play list looks mostly like this: The Final Countdown (Europe), Strike it Up (Black Box), Twilight Zone (2 Unlimited), Howling For You (The Black Keys).

Props to my son for having a pretty varied selection.  80s hair rock. 90s dance and current rock.

Twilight Zone brings me back to my teens.  I loved that song.  It was played during our basketball warm ups.  But know where else I remember it from?  Some Maple Leaf video that featured Felix “The Cat” Potvin (whom I had a crush on).  Hilarious.

Do the songs sound familiar? They are all on the NHL Slap Shot for Wii game – it’s part of the soundtrack.  That’s where my son picked up the interest in them (in case you were thinking he just randomly heard me playing my old Dance Mix ’92 CD).

So, for your enjoyment, here’s what’s playing OVER and OVER again at our house.  Maybe your children will enjoy them too?
