This was a guest post I had done on one of my favourite activity/craft/book blogs No Time For Flashcards, in 2009.
It was an activity I did with my son and I think it’s time to revisit it now that my daughter is old enough. Every few days I picked one of the food groups and we did crafts or colouring pages about that group. We went through our fridge and cupboards to identify what food we have in those groups, and used grocery flyers to help. It was a lot of fun!
Talking about food is a great way to encourage children to want to eat and try it. They don’t *have* to like every thing they eat (I still don’t like eggplant) but I do want to encourage them to at least try. I am finding more and more that they are trying foods and interested in how they are made/where they come from.
Another fun way is to teach kids about eating the colours of the rainbow. We’ve used Today I ate a Rainbow to talk about fruits and vegetables and their colours and this has been a fun way to encourage picky eaters to try new foods. We stopped using it mostly because fruit and veggies (but especially fruit) are very popular with my kids!

Here are some pictures from the activity – I think I’ll update some of them now too!
Hi! This post could not be written any better! Reading this post reminds me of my good old room mate! He always kept chatting about this. I will forward this post to him. Fairly certain he will have a good read. Thanks for sharing!
What a great way to introduce children to the correct food. Keep it up:)
