Remember being younger and rolling your eyes at something your parents said? Or looking at your sibling with a raised eyebrow and trying not to smirk when your parent said that phrase that was such nonsense to you but seemed like their favourite expression? And how before we became parents were were NEVER going to sound like that?
Yeah. I remember that too. But I don’t exactly remember when that changed.
Here’s a few gems that I’ve been tossing around with far too much delight:
“Close the door!” (which for the record, was what my dad would say and we would all repeat it in mocking nature. We still do. Last week I think we did.)
“We’re not heating the outside!”
“Money doesn’t grow on trees”
“Because I said so”
Sigh. It was all fine and dandy until I realized what I was doing.
There’s no denying that we’re parents. And yes, Andy already has ‘dad jokes’.
I can see my kids will be eye rolling us soon.
What parent-isms have you caught yourself saying? Did you think it would happen to you?
For me, the big one is “because I said so.” I swore I’d always be patient with my kids and answer all their questions. And, for the most part I am…but that has backfired a bit as they feel free now to keep asking, and asking, and asking, often at times when we just need to get out the door, or I’m trying to park the car, or I don’t want to talk about a sensitive subject in front of another kid. Every time I bust out the “because I said so” I cringe a little…but it’s a necessary evil. I understand my parents so much better now!
I can’t think of anything in particular but I do sing some songs my mom obviously made up!
