It’s no secret that I am not a great gardener. I aspire to be. I want to be. And then I forget to water plants or something.
This year, I was determined to grow produce. I love supporting my local Farmers’ Market, but there is just something about growing your own food that is fulfilling. Plus, having grown up on a farm myself, I want my own kids to understand that their food doesn’t just come from the grocery store shelves. There’s far more to it than that.
Thanks to a local Ontario company Cubits, led by the super nice person Laura Watts, I received seeds in the mail to grow. I met Laura at Blissdom Canada last year and she’s just one of those people that you WANT to see do well and enjoy following along as they post about their life and business.
Cubits is an organic seed company that began just outside of Toronto, Ontario. They focus on producing organic seeds to help people grow their own food in a sustainable way. Their seeds are not only organic but many are heirloom and rare seeds. They believe in supporting local and their commitment to organic, untreated seeds and environmental business farming methods are fantastic.
If you follow Cubits Organics on Facebook, Twitter and their blog, you can see how hard working they are and just how much they believe in the work they do.
Now back to me and my unimpressive gardening ways. Laura was kind enough to send me seeds to grow in my own small, suburban garden in May.
Each packet has detailed instructions on how to plant the seed, where to plant it and how to grow it. The Cubits Organic Living website also has information to help.
I followed each direction and hoped for the best.
What I’ve witnessed, is a growing garden!
The chipmunk has dug up a few things, the birds keep dropping bird seeds that grow grass in my planters and I managed to completely kill my tomatoes by likely over watering them, but so many things are succeeding! How exciting is it to see cucumber thriving, carrots growing and radishes ready to harvest? All of this from small seeds, carefully saved by Cubits Organics.
I think I’m going to plant some more for a late season harvest. For some seeds I used pots which can be moved and controlled a bit better in my backyard and I think I just need to ensure I beat the frost in the fall.
In years past, I have purchased already-started plants at local stores for the garden. I didn’t find growing the seeds were much more difficult than when I’ve planted the ready-to-go plants. If nothing else, I’ve paid even more attention to my garden this year to really take care of the seeds!
You can purchase Cubits Organics on Etsy but note they have specific summer shipping dates!
Thank you Laura for the fantastic seeds. I’m excited to be learning about and getting better at gardening and to produce delicious food to enjoy. Next year, I’ll be even better prepared!

Disclosure: I was given seeds to try out by Cubits but all opinions are my own. My inability to grow certain things is in no way reflective of the product 😉
