We have been travelling with the kids on road trips long enough now to know how to prepare fairly well. I’ve recommended ideas before on this blog about how to pack for a road trip and other tips for travelling long distances in the car.
One of the most helpful road trip ideas we’ve been implementing is the creation of a car kit for the kids that sits between each of the kids’ car seats. It’s filled with snacks, water, crayons, activity books and more. By placing it within reach of the kids, I don’t have to turn around and pass them as many things as I once did!
How to create a Travel Car Kit for the kids
1- Start with the bag itself. Try to find something study rather than a deep bag. In the past, bookbags have worked but finding a box shape with dividers (like in my picture which was a gift from Ford) is ideal.
2- Fill it with items that will make their trip easier. Safe snacks, crayons/pencil crayons in a container or bag, music players, activity books, stickers and so on. We have a water cup ready to go but you may want to control how much you put in it if you want to avoid too many bathroom breaks!
What’s extra great about these car kits is that once you get to your destination, they still serve as an activity hub in the hotel or cottage and are easy to carry.
