I had a unique nursing experience with my son. For whatever reason, still unknown to me or my doctor, my son rejected nursing off of one of my breasts. We assumed it was either laziness on his part (if it didn’t have a quick let down maybe?) or just his comfort on that side. Whatever the case, after a few weeks of stressing about it, we came to the realization that I could successfully feed him with the ‘good one’. It worked for 20 months. He grew like a weed and was very happy. I weaned him when I got pregnant with his sister.
Now, we are six weeks into our nursing relationship with my little angel. She came out hungry. Had a beautiful latch and accepted both breasts willingly. Finally, I thought, I’ll have use out of both of them. No more worrying about the baby not getting enough or the joys of being lopsided. Fast forward to now and it looks like the ‘runt boob’ is losing the battle again.
At least I don’t feel as stressed. I know she is growing. She is a great sleeper and is very happy. It certainly won’t make me stop nursing. It will be hard for me to buy a swimsuit this summer, but let’s face it, it’s never fun anyway! I am starting to wonder if the ‘good one’ is a bully, taking all of the good let down and milk away from the little one!
I know, it’s bizarre. It’s become a joke with me and my girlfriends. Mostly because we all find it weird that it’s even happening, but it’s even more funny to joke about the lopsidedness, especially if I don’t where the right type of shirt. Oh the things we go through for our babes!
Luckily, along for the ride is a fantastic bra that I wish I had when nursing my son. It’s a Bravado. The bra is comfortable, has an insert for extra lining and makes nursing very easy – even if I end up only using one side.
In Ottawa, I found mine at Milkface, a great source for nursing mothers and moms-to-be. Check it out. The store is online and has locations in Westboro and on Bank Street.
