It’s no secret that we love books in this house. One of my son’s favourite things to do is read with us, or look at the books himself or talk about the books. We have been lucky that he loves reading as much as he does and it’s become a joy to sit and read together.
We have also been lucky because we have access to Scholastic orders. Now, the Boy is only 2.5 and doesn’t go to preschool yet, so how do we order Scholastic books? My sister is a teacher (thanks Aunt K!).
It’s a brilliant set up really – we have access to preschool/Kindergarten aged books (most are great for the toddler, don’t let the ‘age’ suggestions scare you!) and she scores some extra discounts on her orders. I’ve even opened up the order option to my other friends with toddlers because where else can you get a really great book for only $2.99??
My sister recently asked if I could look at the May flyers (I hadn’t planned on getting anything since April was a large order) because she needed a bit more to get a class coupon. Sure, I said, let me see.
Well, 3 books and a reading game later, both of us were happy. I ended up getting (shhh) two books for Daddy for Father’s Day, a book with a clock on it helping to tell time (Diego!) and a board game that encourages phonics and reading. All this for under $20.
My son LOVES the clock book and already can identify some times. The game is a little advanced since he can’t read, but we can play by spinning and moving the horse peg to the colours on the board. He likes this, and it hasn’t taken him long to start matching some words.
If you can, I encourage you to look at the scholastic books available (the flyers are available online). If you don’t have a child in school, see if you can find a teacher friend or a local nursery school that does orders that may allow you to participate. Also, find out if your local school is having a book fair that is open to the community.
While you are browsing the online flyers for books, check out the truly fun activities they have available online too – print some Clifford colouring pages, or play the new favourite around here the Grumpy Bird Match Game.
Here are a few of our favourite finds from Scholastic (a few of many might I add!):

Happy Reading!
