This is a list of a few things I think are a great investment for travelling in the car. These are devices that we wouldn’t normally think about, but after years of travel, we’ve gathered some pretty neat things. Also, these make great gifts for husbands/dads/father-in-laws! (note: I’m not making a special note of listing it, but a DVD player is a wonderful thing when travelling with kids!)
A portable Cooler/mini-fridge
These are great when going on trips that are longer than a few hours, or when you have to stay overnight in a hotel. They plug into the lighter outlets in your vehicle and work just like a fridge. They typically aren’t very big, making it easy to fit in a vehicle, and can hold drinks, small lunch foods, yogurt, baby food and depending on the size, cartons of milk (we’ve done this). It gives you more options for food, other than the fast food junk all the time, or for quick snacks in hotel rooms.
This mini-cooler is on sale at Canadian Tire this week. I like it because it’s small (mine is actually a bit bigger and sometimes seems too big) and can be vertical or lying down. But note: To plug these indoors, you need an adaptor which is sold separately. These are worth having for hotel rooms.
A plug adaptor/inverter
I thought of this only because I saw it on sale in Canadian Tire this week (70% off, so for the $8 it is worth it!) but ours was a gift a few years ago and it is wonderful. When in the car, it means you can plug in things like your camera, kids portable video games etc. There have been plenty of times that on our way to some family function I’m charging the camera batteries because I forgot to the night before.
Satellite Radio

We love our Sirius satellite radio. I got our first one for my husband at Christmas a few years ago, then this past year upgraded it to a new one because we loved it so much. On long drives through areas that get little or poor radio reception. It’s fun flipping between 80s Hair Rock and current Hits.
