I’ve often written on this blog about businesses, products and websites that I use, love or think you may be interested in. It’s one of the coolest things about being connected – finding out new ideas. I am especially drawn to ones that are run by women, and moms.
Polka Dot Grove designs custom art work for your child’s room or play room. Not only are the designs beautiful, but they can be made to match your existing bedding, colours, and theme.
Why do I love it? First, check out the product – creative and something that looks great in any room. Second, because of the owner.
What I especially like is when I find a business that is run not only by a mom but by a really nice one as well. I’ve had the pleasure of becoming friends with her online, and she has recently launched a new site for her business that I wanted to share with you. Meet Sarah, owner of Polka Dot Grove.
Bit of Momsense asks: When did Polka Dot Grove ‘grow’
Sarah: Creating art for children and decorating children’s spaces is something I have always dreamed of doing for a ‘job’. I just wasn’t sure if anyone would want anything from me. A friend (Lisa) and I started experimenting with different ideas on canvas and with paper and we came up with the name Polka Dot Grove together. We are both home with our children and were looking for ways to express our creativity after leaving our teaching careers. She decided to explore writing so I have kind of run with PDG on my own.
BOM*:Have you always been crafty?
I guess I have always been. I kind of had no choice growing up: we had no cable as kids and I sucked at sports. I loved drawing when I was really young and starting painting in high school.
BOM: How do you balance the time between orders, website maintenance, crafting and being at home with the kids?
I am still trying to figure this out! Luckily I am a night owl so I do most of my work at night after the kids go to bed. I am trying to give myself plenty of time (2-3 weeks) to complete each order and that seems to be managable so far. I feel the need to come up with a schedule to keep me on track. I think that’s the teacher in me.
BOM: What advice would you give to other moms who may have a talent or are crafty and are thinking about selling their goods? Where should they begin?
I think the best advice I could give someone would be to go for it! Start a blog to display your work and spread the word. Join twitter; it is the best place to go for support, inspiration and help! I tweeted about the new site and got my first order from a stranger that same day. I am convinced it was because of one of my supportive twitter friends.

*Do you see how the short form of ‘Bit of Momsense’ shortens as BOM – which reads as ‘bomb’. So, I am now, the bomb. Just sayin’. On a related note, I may need sleep 😉
Talented, creative, passionate, funny and nice to boot. Sarah is all of those things. xo Great interview! 🙂
