This week for Food Friday I am going to issue a challenge. Wait, wait – don’t run away yet. It’s a good thing! Amateur cooks and seasoned chefs can all participate:
The challenge:
Cook or bake something that you have been buying that you haven’t made before.
For example, have you been buying lasagne because you haven’t made it before? Dig out a recipe. Been buying bread? Consider making it from scratch (I promise it’s easier than you think, and if you have a bread maker even easier!) Cookies from the store? Try a simple recipe.
There are two reasons for this challenge: 1) Sometime conveneince wins, and that’s okay. But if we can make the time to cook something from scratch, the rewards are plenty – and the taste is wonderful. Reducing processed, high sugar, high sodium foods is a good thing (even if not possible all the time) 2) I like to try new things. Don’t worry if it doesn’t work – the fact that you tried is important.
My goal: I am going to try to make mayonnaise. I love mayo, (well, ‘whipped dressing’ to be more specific) and we use it in salads, sandwiches, muffins even. So I am going to give it a try from scratch.
Once I made ketchup from scratch. I haven’t again (it wasn’t that good!) but maybe this summer I’ll give it another try.
Are you in?
What food would you like to try and make? Leave a comment and let me know if you had some success or if you will still be finding it weekly from the store shelves?
Where are you going to get pasteurized eggs? I’m curious, because if you know of a place, I would love to get my hands on some for a risky raw egg recipe of my own.
We ran out of BBQ sauce a couple weeks ago, and I wanted some for hamburgers that I had made. Remembering that one of my old college roomies made her own once, I googled a recipe, and sure enough, I made some, as Ryan said “absolutely amazing” BBQ sauce, with the basic recipe and adding in some of my own spices 🙂
Thanks for sharing, I found this story, while searching for some free downloads and ran across this website, interesting comments and great points made.
Interesting article. Were did you got all the information from… 🙂
Cool ideas here, thanks. I honestly took the plunge and got me some chickens last week! Now I have more eggs than I know what to do with!. You might like these egg recipes.
