I grew up in the country so the Fair weekend was a pretty big deal. As young kids it was fun, and typically since our school was right beside the fairgrounds we entered into exhibit contests and somehow participated as a class/school.
As we got older, it became the fun, cool place to hang out as pre-teens. We’d get dropped off, meet friends, and have fun.
The fair for me meant baseball tournaments, friends, rides, and most especially food that I shouldn’t eat but crave. Fried and greasy, I can’t deny being a sucker for it. (Side note Ottawa readers: Our fair, an hour away from Ottawa, had a ‘Beaver Tail’ stand but it was called ‘Elephant Ears’. I called your ‘Beaver Tails’ ‘Elephant Ears’ for years)
The Navan Fair was this weekend and for the first time since we’ve lived in Ottawa we took the kids. More specifically, we are usually travelling when the fair is in town sot he timing this year worked wonderfully.
Yes, fairs are expensive (if you want to do the rides, eat, play games and eat again) but it’s an experience. I was lucky to have won admission passes from Ottawa Mommy Club.
No matter the cost, the kids had a lot of fun. They loved the rides, walking around the petting zoo, seeing the tractors and just being there.
I had fun too. And ate mini donuts.
Good for you! I grew up in a small town and the fair was the biggest social event of the year — from the time I was a preschooler til I left town.
Glad it was fun for your family. I’d like to go again sometime too. Always meant to take my kids to the one in my hometown, but never got around to it.
