Have you heard about the Elf on the Shelf? Does your family participate? After seeing some conversations about it for the past year or two, we finally decided that this year we would start with the tradition. Just in time, they released a short show about the Elf on the Shelf to explain how it works.
Basically, the Elf arrives from the North Pole, is given magic once he’s named by the kids, and returns to Santa each night.
In our house, he arrived last night. My son noticed the box sitting under the tree first (which is what we expected) and was pretty excited when he realized that we were bestowed our own elf visitor.
The kids went through a list of names (all suggested by them) – but the first round – Princess Peach, Boots, Merlin, Snowman – were rejected by one of them. Finally, they both agreed on a name: Gingy. And so our elf received his magic and he was gently placed up on the china cabinet to observe.
Now, he isn’t supposed to be touched, but we’ve suggested that adults can touch him, to help him stay safe, and because it wasn’t us who gave him magic – the kids, however, can’t touch him, for fear of losing his magic.
Each night, Gingy will go home to Santa while we sleep and return before we awake – who knows where he will perch himself each day!
We are excited to start this new tradition and I’m excited think of some creative ways for Gingy to hang out in the house while we sleep!
Did you receive an elf from the North Pole this year?
We did get an Elf – my mom sent it after seeing my nephews in the US go crazy for their Elf. We ended up with Eggnog (it was easy to say), but we had extreme disappointment when he found out he couldn’t cuddle the Elf to sleep.
How did you get yours, Rebecca? Do they ship up here? Would you mind sending me the details, cost, etc?
