I don’t know what it is about the summer, but it’s the season of the book for me. Maybe it’s because the days are much longer, and I can take a book to the back yard and read into the night. Maybe it’s because in the winter when it’s dark at 4:30 it’s impossible for me to stay awake. Whatever the case, the summer is when I really read.
It’s not unusual when I start a book that I become engrossed in it. Late, sleepless nights spent with a child sleeping on my should while I have a dim light on a book in my hands over my head. I don’t like to read sad books or really ‘deep’ books. I like adventure, mystery, fantasy that grips me into the story.
The picture above are my books on the list for the summer. I have been loving The Hunger Games, but now that the Game of Thrones show started back on tv I am remember HOW OBSESSED THESE CHARACTERS MAKE ME. Sorry, I yelled that, but that’s how I feel! I figure – if I read the books, I can cheat and get ahead of the show!
On May 1, the new Sookie Stackhouse book hits the book stores. I will buy it day 1, and it will take me a few days to read (depending on how much sleep I sacrifice). It’s been a really fun series for me, and I’ll be sad to see it end after next year’s thirteenth book.
And yes, I am only reading actual books – no e-readers for me. I just can’t get into them. I know how they are lighter and save space, but there is something about the tactile feeling of an actual book that I can’t give up yet.
Are you a summer reader? Year round? What’s on your summer reading list? Have you read the above books that are on mine? Let’s chat!
I really enjoyed the entire Hunger Games trilogy but found the last book particularly difficult to read.
I’ve also read the entire Eragon series and enjoyed them. The first book is probably the best, I think the later books could have been shortened. But they are still a good read.
The Game of Thrones books caused me a lot more trouble. I loved the first season, so I decided to read the books. I made it through the first 2 but it’s a struggle. I find that I’m anxious to find out about the characters I really care about, and some of the battle descriptions aren’t as appealing to me. That being said, I wanted to read ahead so I wasn’t surprised by any beheadings.
I haven’t created a summer reading list yet. I tend to download free books for my Kindle or borrow books that look interesting. I do want to read The Bloggess’ book and the new Sophia Kinsella (Shopaholic author) and maybe something more intellectual (ha). My sister got me “Summer of 1914” that’s got a certain Downton Abbey appeal.
I think that’s why I’m reading the books – to keep ahead of the show now 😉 I’ve heard the same thing about Mockingbird over and over which is kind of stressing me out – I hate the thought of not enjoying the finale.
Let me know how the Downton-esque is!!
I was not keen on reading the Hunger Games (the whole concept really disturbed me) but my 11-year-old son really wanted to read it so I thought I had better too. I wanted to make sure I could discuss it with him if he had any questions. Well… I got completely hooked and read the whole series in no time! Now, my husband, son, and I are planning a “date” to see the movie. My son and I had so much fun reading the same book that we have our own little “book club” going. Great way to bond with the kids when they get a little older.
I love reading too and rarely don’t have a book on the go. I’m looking forward to reading The Slap by Christos Tsiolkas next.
That sounds wonderful!
I think I’m going to start some smaller chapter books with my 5 year old. Can’t wait until he’s old enough for Percy Jackson etc. (books I want to read too!)
What, no lady porn?
oohhh 50 Shades of Grey! How did I forget that? I’ll add that to my Sookie Stackhouse order 😉
I’m a real book person too, soul sistah. If you like the Hunger Games you’ll also like Divergence. Plus the sequel Insurgence is coming out in June.
I read someone else talking about them – good to know, thanks!!
Loved The Hunger Games trilogy. Currently working through the second book of Game of Thrones. I do not enjoy the series though at all. So if you love the series you may not enjoy the books. Seems to be the way. Since it will take me another year to finish Game of Thrones series, I’m pretty much done until next summer 😉
I love the Hunger Games trilogy, all three books. I haven’t read the last of the Eragon series so that’s on my list. I’m about to start Game of Thrones which means I’ll be M.I.A. for a while. My fun books to read are any James Rollins and Susanna Kearsley. Although I have a Kobo I have yet to download any books to it. I like the feel of the pages between my fingers.
Happy reading!
I finished all the Hunger books and they are fantastic! Just finished all the Dragon Girl books and couldn’t put them down. Sarah’s Key is a tear jerker. Now looking for something more uplifting and I hear 50 Shades of Grey is quite racy! I think that will be next:)
I loved Gods Behaving Badly a few years ago and will re-read it this summer before the movie comes out. Made me laugh out loud.
Since having kids i haven’t been reading as much as I would like. Although I did manage to finish the Hunger Games trilogy while I was sick a few weeks back. I loved them. I will have to return to this post for some ideas. I have a new ipad with the kindle reader on it. I have never tried an e-book, I think it is time 🙂
Starting a summer reading program at school requires a lot of cooperation among teachers, students, parents and librarians, but after the first year, things will go smoothly.
Although I did manage to finish the Hunger Games trilogy while I was sick a few weeks back. Thanks for sharing.
