It’s impossible for me to believe that it’s now been over 3 years since I was pregnant. (My love of pregnancy, despite illness will be a different post one day. Oh I miss it some times! 😉
When I got pregnant with my son 6 years ago, it was my first and I was fortunate enough not to have to buy maternity clothes for many months in. Â When I started to show it was late spring/early summer so even stretchy skirts and long tank tops did the job – maternity or not.
I hated the thought of spending $60 on pants or $40 on a top. Â I was frugal enough to know that even though I needed the clothes (and much preferred proper fitting clothing to my changing body!) I also new that this state was temporary.
But investing in some of these pieces is a must. Â I was still working during my first pregnancy so I had to dress for work. Â And while I enjoyed wearing yoga pants a lot, I did learn over time the importance of buying a few key pieces. Â It’s worth the investment (just like nursing pjs and tops are but that may be a another post too!).
Here are some tips (that I learned through trial and error) when shopping for maternity clothing:
1) Check out the sales
Short sleeves in the winter may seem foolish, but I was all about the layering. Â Some cold winter days I felt incredible warm! It doesn’t hurt to have variety.
The sales racks may be hit and miss with sizing though so you may have to check often and compromise on the look. Â Yes, I would have preferred blue to coral, but for $6.99 the coral wasn’t looking so bad!
2) Check Consignment Shops
There weren’t as many consignment shops selling maternity clothes 6 Â years ago but they are much easier to find now. Pants that I would have had to buy full price for ($49.99 maybe) can be found on consignment for $14.99.
3) Share!
I was lucky and had friends who were pregnant around the same time so I benefited from some hand me down clothing. This is especially helpful when you need a ‘fancy dress’ or blouse for special events that you may not need to wear more than once.
What to splurge on:
1) Undergarments
You want well fitted underwear and a proper bra. Â I didn’t think I’d care about the bras, but as my breasts grew, I new that it was worth buying something that looked and felt good. (keep an eye on the sales!)
2) Tank Tops
These you can usually find for a reasonable price, but what I liked about maternity tank tops was that I could layer. Â At first they covered the belly. Â Then they could go underneath other tops that were getting a bit short.
3) Pants
As much as I loved my yoga pants and skirts, every so often I needed a great pair of jeans or nice pants to go out for dinner, appear at a meeting, Â or to look like I wasn’t dressing for the gym. Â I didn’t need too many, but the ones I liked best were the ones that grew with my belly (and that I could wear after the baby was born!)
Now, it’s been many years since I’ve been shopping for maternity clothes, but with 2 sisters both expecting near the end of the year, I suspect I’ll get to browse some shops soon.
Tell me: What are you tips for maternity clothes shopping? And where do you shop for maternity clothes (note: there were about 2 stores in 2006 that I could shop in! Now, I know there are many more!)
Tips for maternity shopping:
– Here is a big one: don’t waste tons of your money on maternity clothes…save for when you have baby and your hips change and you need to buy a whole new wardrobe. That is what happened to me, and I am only 1-2 pounds away from my pre-pregnancy weight. Plus, if you are BFing….the girls will be bigger 🙂
– For what you do need: basics, basics, basics. A pair of jeans, couple of pairs of dress pants if you are working, a skirt, and then lots of plain tops, but nice tops. You know those free t-shirts that were too big when you got them at an event…they are perfect for pregnancy!
– Get some yoga pants if you don’t have some already. They stretch (mine didn’t over-stretch), and they are the perfect pant to wear during those first weeks when it is REALLY hard to wear normal pants.
– If you are going to have a Dec-Feb baby, consider buying a winter maternity jacket, or finding one of your husbands to steal. You will not get back into your winter jacket right away! Otherwise, skip it
– I bought all my stuff of the sale rack – Thyme Maternity was my store, I didn’t go anywhere else
Both your sisters are expecting at the same time? How cool is that? My sister is due in December 🙂 She loves the Flexi-Belt I gave her, which turns everyday pants & skirts into maternity wear (designed in Denmark): http://www.onsgear.com/?id=27&item=171 Saves on the amount of maternity pants you would normally have to buy. But I’d still suggest one really comfortable pair of maternity jeans… I wore mine so much! Useful post-partum too!
I really want to be a pregnant woman. I am eager and look forward to buy stuff for my upcoming baby. How I wish I get pregnant. Thanks for the tips for maternity shopping.
My biggest tip is take a drive to south of the border. I bought my entire maternity wardrobe including work clothes and a winter jacket at the motherhood outlet (much better selection at the US stores) and target Liz Lange for 400.00 total!
I totally agree with Rebecca, don’t spend alot on maternity clothes, you won’t wear them for very long. I borrowed alot of my clothes so I would recommend hitting up your friends, neighbours, etc.
I would definitely invest in a post-pregnancy nursing gear. I found those really hard to find in stores so I shopped online. Momzelle has great nursing tops, Bravado has great bras and Glamour Moms has an amazing nursing tank with a tummy panel to help suck you in.
If you’re not an online clothes shopper don’t worry, they have great charts to help with sizing and if you’re unsure just call them.
I found a number of fun pieces in the Joe Fresh clothing section at Loblaws! I’d noticed before the pregnancy that they had a number of simple dress made out of jersey fabric, and that their t-shirts were quite long. Sure enough, I ended up finding quite a bit that fit, even in my 7th and 8th month! And at a steal, no less!
I don’t really spend much on maternity clothes. I do buy those which are on sale. Thanks for the tips.
I love purchasing maternity clothes when I was pregnant so that is why I’m interested reading this post.
