A Mom’s Guide to Pokemon Cards

Are these things over taking your child’s life? We are fully into Pokemon cards here. They’ve become like currency at school. I mean, it’s a fairly inexpensive hobby, but the kids aren’t fooling around.

When my son discovered he was one of the only ones without a tin or a binder of some sort to hold his cards in, he made one for himself.  With paper and staples, taping each card inside his ‘book’. I was extremely proud of his innovation. He saw a problem and fixed it.

But weeks later, as the book was falling apart, I gave in and got him a binder with card dividers.  It cost me a few dollars and he was very happy. Plus, his cards are safer in there.

Meanwhile, he plays a game with his dad called Scrammers. It’s a made up Pokemon card game that has them attacking each other and making up moves. Points again for creativity.

However, I know many of us are still struggling to connect to this game.  The powers, the names, the effect. Honestly, I have no idea how an actually Pokemon card game is played.  Frankly, I don’t think many of the kids do either.

But I do know how to sound like a cool mom (at least, to a 6 year old).

So, I’ve put together a handy-dandy guide for the rest of you wanting to get interested in this past time, but aren’t really sure where to start. I’ve even including a script to help steer the conversation.
