We leave next week for the cottage in PEI and spent last weekend taking the train to Toronto for a couple of nights. I would say that our family is fairly well versed in travel, of most distances, on many modes of transportation. I’ve gotten pretty good at remember what to pack, how to pack efficiently and how to keep the kids happy (and us sane) along the way. This includes making sure we have some fun travel games.
What Games To Bring To The Cottage?
As we approach a 2 week stay in PEI this year, our first extended stay like that, I decided to freshen up our cottage activities in case of rain days and the inevitable early mornings with the kids.
One of my favourite things to do when at the cottage is drink my coffee while in my pjs and the patio door open with the breeze coming into the living room and play UNO with my son. We bring that UNO pack most places we go – hotel rooms, train trip, cottage and more. My daughter now knows how to play the game so it’s perfect for all of us.
The cottage already has a chess board and that’s where my son learned to play a couple of years ago. He loves it and early mornings are spent playing chess with his dad.
When I was a kids I remember playing Rummoli at the cottage we would visit with cousins. We were a bit older but I remember loving it and can’t wait to introduce that to the kids!
So what else do we bring when travelling and staying at hotels or at the cottage? To add to my supply, I visited our advertiser Tag Along Toys a couple of weeks ago and found a full wall of options!
TIP: Remember to bring things that fit neatly in your purse or small bag, bringing giant boxes everywhere will only make this more stressful!
What games do I recommend? Check out these for starters!
Travel and Cottage Games:
1- UNO and/or a Deck of Cards
This is a personal family favourite!
2- Spot It!
This simple card game is perfect for all members of the family because it’s mostly image based and has quickly become a use hit. Don’t follow the suggested age which begins at 7, my 4 year old is probably the biggest fan of this game.
3- Zingo
Like spot it, this is image based (although words are included) plus it’s bilingual. Both my 4 year old and 6 year old can play it, and love it and it’s a game that will grow with them.
4- Chess
My 6 year old really enjoys playing chess!
5- Snakes and Ladders
Sometimes the classics are best, and if nothing else this is a perfect game to practice counting for younger ones, just don’t tell them they are learning 😉
6- Colouring/Activity Books
I know this may be a given, but my kids love colouring more when we travel it seems and is a sure-fire restaurant pleaser.
7- Mini Travel Games like Connect Four!
Portable and fun, these games can tuck in your purse!
