My Mother is Law is in town visiting this week and there are a few things we share in common – aside from our love of baking (and eating said baking) and period-piece romances, we also love antiques.
After visiting other family, she picked up some of her mother’s salt cellars (which we tend to just call salts). Have you heard of them before? They are small, tiny bowl-like dishes (and by small, I means small) that once upon a time would have held salt on the dinner table, before the days of the salt shaker.
Wikipedia has some interesting information about salt cellars, like the fact that they seem to date to classical Rome.
With the popularity of flavoured salt and finishing salts in kitchens, I wonder if the salt cellar will make a resurgence? Either way, I think they are pretty and lovely!
I linked on over by the way of Simple Bites. Your Salt Cellar post caught my eye…only because I bought a new salt cellar yesterday. I have used salt cellars for years. Your MIL’s treasures are little beauties.
oh!! Thank you for stopping by! So excited to hear that others have been using salt cellars (even though I didn’t even know the actual name until recently!) When I visit antique shops, I often look to see if they have them. My MIL certainly has some pretty ones!
