It’s apple season! I love this time of year. The Fall inspires me to cook hearty, delicious meals far more frequently than the summer. Don’t get me wrong, I love to eat in the summer, but I tend to switch from light and refreshing to warm and filling as the weather cools. It’s my way to prepare for hibernation maybe!
With apples around us everywhere, it’s easy to incorporate them into our meals. While sweet recipes (see these apple crisp recipes) are always a favourite, adding them to our savoury dishes complements a meal as well. Did you grow up having apple sauce on the side when pork roast was served like I did? They are a natural fit.
My Kraft Canada What’s Cooking contribution this month is a twist on a classic. The grilled cheese sandwich is a go-to for all of us, and certainly a hit with the kids, but this grown-up version adds a new dimension. The kids may stick with their regular, boring grilled cheese, but I loved the sweet and tart elements of this apple grilled cheese. The maple dijon completed it for me.
Enjoy!
Ingredients:
1 thinly sliced apple (don’t worry about peeling it!)
1 tbsp grainy dijon mustard
1 tbsp maple syrup
6 full slices of Cracker Barrel Cheddar Cheese
Your favourite bread
Directions:
Turn on your pan to a medium heat. Prepare to make your grilled cheese sandwich as you usually would by buttering both sides of your bread slices.
Combine the mustard and maple syrup. Spread evenly on the inside of each bread. Place one piece of bread butter side down on the warm pan. Layer with your thinly sliced apples and cheese. Cover with the other piece of bread.
Cook until the bread is beginning to brown, then flip. Brown the other side until the cheese is melting.
Serve and enjoy!
