Working from home is not something new for me, however, there has never been a more intense time to work at home.
Before, I would be able to take my tea break and planning sessions at the dining room table, where the afternoon light is best. The silence of the house would be a calming presence and I would lay out my paper supplies, calendars and journals ready to take notes and make plans before heading back to my desk to answer emails.
Now, that space is Andy’s office and my daughter’s school room. The basement is a high school. And my bedroom/office remains the only quiet space to work. My small (and admittedly messy) desk is large enough to hold my computer, keyboard, note pads, the empty plate from my breakfast and a cup of coffee. No spreading out calendars and planners here.
So maybe it’s time to admit that in 2021 I need to treat this small corner of my room better and get organized and cozy. I need to ensure some comfort while being productive.
Here are some ways I plan to do that (and if you have ideas please share them!)
A New Chair is Needed
My inexpensive desk was built at Ikea by just putting together a table top and four legs. I didn’t need a drawer. Honestly, it’s been perfect. But what I should have done is invested the desk savings into a chair. Instead, I have a firm plastic chair that is truly not comfortable. I’ve had it for years ha!
I think it’s time to get a new chair. With some back support. I don’t think I want wheels though so we’ll see what I find. And I need to look for comfort over style. But a combo would be best.
Being Cozy and Comfortable
There are a few ways that I like to be cozy while working. Tea is definitely one of them. When I was home alone, I would sometimes have an afternoon tea. Sometimes, I would treat myself by going out for a latte at the coffee shop. Now, with both Andy and I home, we make a pot of tea daily. It’s the afternoon comfort I need.
Another discovery? A Magic Bag. I was gifted these last year from the company (my daughter also has the stuffed animal ‘Warmy‘ friends which have been great for comfort) and I am in love. The hot/cold compresses are used constantly by all of us. I use the Neck-to-Back at my desk to relax my shoulders. It warms me up but also is a reminder to let go of some of the tension while I’m working. Honestly, love this product.
Getting Organized
The only way I’m going to make this space work (since it’s already a multipurpose space) is if I keep it organized. This is not a strength for me. But I need to reduce the clutter to feel more productive. I always feel better when I do it! And yet, I just don’t. Sigh.
I may need some more shelves but I’ll assess that soon enough.
I have to make this space work for me. It’s going to be my office for years to come, but with everyone home for many more months, it’s even more important that I can work comfortably here.
Are you feeling the same way about your work space?
