If you are a caregiver, or you have a youth caregiver, and your kids enjoy a backyard pool, or you or someone you know takes the kids to public pools and places with water, the City of Ottawa has a virtual Safeguard course just for you!
It’s all about supervision when children are in and around water, what to do in case of emergency and more.
Here are the details for Safeguard:
Course description: Recommended participants are at least 12 years of age, able to swim or comfortable in water, and have some lifesaving experience. The Safeguard program emphasizes the responsibilities guardians undertake when accompanying people in their care to recreational swims supervised by lifeguards and unsupervised environments (e.g backyard pool, lakes). The program stresses the importance of water safety awareness, accident prevention, and the principles of safety supervision in an aquatic setting. Guardians learn how to identify hazards, risky behaviours, victims in distress, and their role in safety supervision and rescue response.
If this might be of interest to your family, your teen, or another caregiver, find out more registration information on the City of Ottawa website under ‘recreation programs’. The fee is just over $10.
