It should come as no surprise that I love food. I did as a kid – the joke was that at the age of 10 my parents realized they were in trouble when I was ordering the same meal as my dad at a restaurant, and finishing it – and I continue to as an adult.
Hubby and I would always choose a dinner date as our Saturday night outings before kids. We’d pick some wonderful or hidden location in Ottawa or a stand by like Moxie’s in the East end when it first opened. We’d drink, we’d eat, we were merry.
I’m also a food host. I entertain my family (9-15 people depending on time of year) at Thanksgiving, Christmas and what was started as a restaurant style meal – a fancy table d’hote dinner that I would cook to order.
An idea I got from a girlfriend of mine, prior to our dinner (again, usually 9 adults), I would send a menu to all my guests, offering a selection of starters, mains, and desserts. It didn’t take them long to be smart about it – if my sister order one dish, her husband ordered the other so they could try everything. Essentially, I was making two, 3-course meals. It became a tradition that we love, with some of our fondest memories. In a future post I’ll share one of my menus.
To me, that’s really what food is about. It’s one thing to eat well, it’s another to cherish the memories that sitting around the table eating can lead to. Inside jokes, a lot of laughing and a calm feeling that everything in the world is okay, at that moment.
Do you love food as much as I do? Hate the dishes like I do? This blog will continue to feature recipes, because, it’s what I do and what I love. Maybe this ties into my hobby post?
