The Green Bins started arriving in the fall and we were very excited to get ours! Now, collection is beginning and Ottawa residents have the opportunity to put certain waste in the green bin, in addition to the blue and black boxes for recycling we already have.
For those of you not familiar with the program, the City of Ottawa will now be collecting Green Bins with our garbage/recycling pick up that residents fill with organic materials – yard waste, leftovers, used paper towels, coffee grinds etc.
Today is the day I pull out the mini kitchen bin. We’ve already started putting some things like leaves etc. in the larger Green bin but now we can put items like egg shells and left over food in too.
I’ll be interested to see how well the program goes, but I think if done right, it will be a great program to have. I want to also see how it (I suspect) decreases the number of garbage bags we put out each week. There may be more discussion in the news about the $38 tax fee for collection, but isn’t that $38 a year well worth it to reduce our waste?
For more information, or to find out about collection, visit the Green Bin Ottawa website. There is also a game and colouring pages for kids to play and learn about. If you are a parent or teacher, you may be interested in the curriculum section as well.
So tell me Ottawa – are you participating in the Green Bin Program? If you don’t live in Ottawa, do you have a program like this in your area?
