We’ve had a few more sessions with the Boy for speech therapy and it’s going quite well. He is still eager to do the exercises with me during the week, plus, he happily goes to our appointment (a bit of a surprise since usually he is quite shy and timid. He really opens up and acts himself around the therapist which is great!
What I’ve been really happy about is that she really customizes the sessions and exercises for him – not only his needs, but his readiness.
For example, she was having us work on breathing exercises, getting him to really fill his belly (not chest) with air to increase the breath (a component of speaking). But he really was having a hard time doing it – he’s suck in his belly thinking he was filling it etc. He’s just not ready for this exercise,so we’re waiting to try it again.
At first we were working on lifting the tip of his tongue to the roof of his mouth. T, D, N etc. We’re continuing that but are now also working on lifting the back of his tongue for G and hopefully soon K.
This week’s focus has been on W and especially Wah sounds. One. What. Water. One is a hard one, he says ‘young’. So we’re working on separating our the ‘Wah – Un’ and sounding it together. Also, the ‘oos’ again – Two, Moo, Boo and rounding the lips. This one he’s doing very well with.
I am very proud of how he’s trying so hard!
Many of you have asked me to keep updating, or tweeted me with questions about the program. Feel free to do so. I’ll keep updating here as well.
I am really glad that he is doing so well. My son is 3 (both our kids are close in age) and his speech is a mess. The only reason I have not taken him to see someone is that we have spoken to him in our native tongue for the last 2 years straight and his english vocab is poor. His english is picking up fast – but he's not there yet. The daycare we send him to is on our language as well. But he can't say "B" amongst other sounds.
I went to Speech Therapy as a child. I was older though. I was in grade 1 believe. I couldn't say "th" so I said "tank you" amongst some other probs. It took one session and I was all fixed up. Good job and great post!
