I joked that my son, upon asking for a Creeper cake for his birthday, suggested I hire a professional to complete the task when I told him I would be trying to make it myself.
In fairness, I have spoiled my children with the edible, fun creations of local cupcake and cake owners in Ottawa for the past many years, so I could understand his confusion when I told him this would be the year that I brought the cake baking in house.
And it’s not that he thinks I’m a bad baker – he gobbles up almost every creation I come up with that has any bit of sweetness to it. I think he just wasn’t comfortable leaving the design aspect in my questionable hands.
I know Minecraft, and I know what a creeper looks like. I knew instantly that the square headed figure who was green with a small block face would be, in theory, easy enough to implement.
I searched the internet for what I had hoped would be a reliable chocolate cake recipe, which could have been my first mistake since I’m sure others I know have a solid recipe, but settled on this one from the Joy of Baking website.
I bought food colouring in leaf green and black from the Bulk Barn and waiting until Saturday to create. I already had an 8×8 inch pan in my possession so if nothing else, the shape was doable.
In the end, it turned out pretty darn well. He was pleased with the design and taste, and the verdict from others who tasted it, including myself, was that it was really tasty. I piled on the icing, a simple buttercream, so that didn’t hurt any I’m sure, but the flavour of the cake recipe was excellent.
I would make this again. As long as it’s a square shape.
Seems like yesterday that we met outside of Shoppers, with your daughter in the stroller and your son holding on to the side of it and now he’s 8!!! I wish him a year filled with all that he hopes. You certainly started it off well with this Creeper cake that he asked for. I’m sure you impressed the heck out of him with it too. Great job!
