Within the next couple of weeks, the Man and I are hoping to re-organize the basement. It’s a finished basement that’s pretty long (which is why we can play so much baseball, as I discussed here). Mainly we use it for a playroom, and really I’m grateful to have a space that’s very kid-friendly.
However, we need to do more to make it better organized for us and the kids. We have a bin for toys and books and random driving ‘things’ for the Boy lying around. We do have a TV in the room (here’s hoping for a flat screen sometime!) and limited seating – a futon for the couch (we do like having the extra bed sometimes during the holidays). There are two side walls I use to put the Boy’s artwork and activities/themes/maps on, but to hang them I only use that blue tacky/putty stuff. We also have the computer/printer/filing cabinet down there with some stacks of papers that need to be filed. It works, but it’s far from ideal.
So the plan is to get IKEA shelves like this:
And put some bins at the bottom for toys, put the Boy’s books on the shelves and have the stuff we don’t want him touching up top (office stuff etc.)
I feel good about the plan. But really, this is a long time in the making. We use the room mostly for the kids (rarely entertain down there) and want to keep it family friendly so I feel it can be a big task.
So, I need some help! Do you have any great tips/accessories/products that we really need or that you can’t live without in your playroom? A neat way to keep crafts? What about stuffed animals that I want to keep but aren’t played with? What about things like magnetic paint – does that exist? I swear I read something about it…
Any help would be really appreciated, because to be honest, organization is not my strong suit!
What are your tips for keeping stuff together? Post a comment with your ideas/tips/links to products or drop me an email and I’ll put together a new blog post with all these tips for others to read and use. Have a great playroom complete already? Please email me a pic to get inspiration from!
Hopefully once our little project is done, I’ll have some before and after pictures too! Thank you for your help!!
