Why, hello Sunshine and Warm Temperatures. I didn’t expect to see the two of you as a couple again so soon. I’m really glad you were able to work things out and come back together. Sunshine, I know you stepped out a little on Warm Temperatures to flirt with Winter, but really, he was no good for you (or me) so now that you are back together with Warm Temperatures, I feel really good.
It’s a nice, sunny 18 degrees here in Ottawa today and according to the Weather Network, the sun is out across the country. Tomorrow, we’ll even see 25 degrees! Can you believe it? It’s only April! But, with that 25 degrees come UV warnings. Tomorrow’s prediction is 6 which is HIGH.
Even though it’s still April, we should be pulling out the sunscreen. For the wee ones, the best prevention is to avoid the sun at it’s peak, or keep them covered up, wearing hats and light, long sleeves. The Caring for Kids website of the Canadian Paediatric Society has some great recommendations to keep our kids safe from the sun. They also recommend no sunscreen for babies under 6 months old.
But, with regular sunscreens I worry about the ingredients. I’d prefer to use a more natural, non-toxic way of protecting us from the sun so I’m in the market for a safe alternative sunscreen. Do you know of a green sunscreen? I’d love to hear recommendations.
In the meantime, I make sure our play areas have lots of shade, that the kids are covered with hats or long sleeves if it’s not too hot, and when possible we avoid the hottest parts of the day (luckily, this usually corresponds with nap time anyway). For the summer swims, I recently purchased these cute swim suits from Please Mum:
Aren’t they cute?!
So this weekend when you are getting the kids out to play and enjoying some of the sunshine, remember that while it’s still only April, the sun’s rays can still be too strong for our wee ones – and a little bit of sunscreen never hurt us either 😉
