Our backyard space is something that I cherish. We had it professionally done years ago to make it like an extra room. It’s fenced off for the kids. There are gardens, places to sit and relax and opportunities for the kids to play. The sprinkler is always a hit, the sandbox still in use, and imagination runs freely in our small space.
But as the kids grow, I try to keep up with some fun things for them to do. We decided long ago not to get a play set for the back – it would take up too much space and clutter the area – so instead we are getting creative.
I purchased three items from Lowe’s the other day that are not only inexpensive (under $40 for everything!) but are already proving to be fun (and easy) additions to our backyard!
1- A Steering Wheel ($20)
What is it with kids and steering wheels? I attached it to our deck that is immediately off the patio door, which then leads down to our main patio/garden area. Now, our deck can be a car, the Millenium Falcon or a pirate ship. Plus, it was easy to install (clearly, since I did it!)
2- Plumbing pipe (about $6)
This is so simple, it’s almost silly. A long black piece of plumbing pipe with a curved piece at the top or bottom and tie wrapped to the deck becomes a communicator or scope. I think I’ll get more for them to construct some water fun later this summer too.
3- Paint brushes, roller and tray ($10)
This is something I picked up from the Children’s Museum here in Ottawa. A simple paint tray, roller and some brushes plus some water makes for pretend painting. So simple, but fun!
We have more plans for the yard – to make it adult friendly and kid friendly – so I’ll share those along the way. I want to get a bench (would love a log one) for the kids to use as a stage too. Plus, I can not wait for the plants to grow again and to plant some new ones. Hooray Spring!
Have you done any easy, fun additions to your back yard?
