I’m pleased to have the Shenkman Arts Centre as an advertiser this month. They offer fantastic family programming year round in Ottawa/Orleans and the facility is just fantastic. There are no bad seats, they have a larger theatre and a smaller, more intimate one for a variety of shows throughout the year. There really is something for the entire family.
We’ve been to performances of The Nutcracker, Peter Pan, The Holly and the Ivy and more. We’ve attended family events at Shenkman, checked out the arts projects on display and I am proud to say that Shenkman is once again hosting the charity event that I help co-organize Shopping and Sweets.
Currently they are promoting the Dufflebag Theatre shows that are scheduled.
My daughter and I went to Cinderella a couple of weekends ago. Up next is Dracula (October 27) and Peter Pan (March 23, 2014).
These performances aren’t the traditional stories that we are used to with these classics. These are fun, twisted versions with plenty of humour and audience participation.
The shows are aimed at children aged 4 and up, although some of the jokes were aimed more at parents (with pop culture references for example), making this something many ages can enjoy.
And I did say audience participation. When we went to Cinderella, they ended up inviting 4 different audience members on stage to play various roles. They simply had to follow the instructions of the narrator (ie: ‘she opened the door’ and the child would pretend to open a door). But the young people who were on stage for the show unexpectedly were fantastic and really got into their roles. Don’t worry, if chosen your child can decline and the company will pick someone else to help them out!
My daughter laughed a lot (as did I and the rest of the audience) and loved participating. The audience was asked to respond to cues and clap or make sounds when certain phrases were said. This repetition and involvement was very fun and we enjoyed watching Cinderella told in a very new way.
