Green, eco-friendly lunches have become more common now. It doesn’t mean all of the school lunches we pack are perfect; there are still packaging bits to throw out and so on, but it does mean parents and schools are more aware, and more interested, in making small changes.
Our school implements a boomerang lunch program which means most of the garbage and food that isn’t eaten comes home with the kids. They are encouraged to recycle at school (and my daughter’s class has taken up composting) but everything else comes home.
I don’t mind this for a variety of reasons. Primarily, it’s a good way to see what was a hit and what was a miss in their lunch. However, it’s also a great way to encourage the kids to learn where the garbage goes, what goes into our compost, our recycle bin and so on.
When Funkins asked me to join their campaign for a greener lunch with their fun reusable napkins, I was on board 100%. I was already sending too many paper towels in the kids’ lunches, which can be composted, but we are trying to reduce our paper towel use. The Funkins reusable napkins were the perfect way to get around this. They are made in Canada too!
They help keep the lunch boxes, and the kids’ faces, clean. My daughter has told me that she either puts hers on her lap while eating her lunch, or as a place mat. I’m sure that looks pretty fancy around the school lunch table! Not only do they make a useful place mat and functional napkin, but they also can wrap food in them, like sandwiches!

In this video for Funkins, I offer a few tips for boomerang lunches and ways to reduce the mess. Yes, they can mean a messier lunch bag coming home, but it’s also a good thing for us to be able to reduce the school’s waste and teach kids about recycling, composting, and reducing the amount garbage we produce.
Thank you Funkins for making our lunches a little more fun, and eco-friendly!
Disclosure: I am a part of a Funkins promotional campaign and was compensated for this post. Opinions are my own. As you know, we try to make our lunches and home more eco-friendly when we can. I have really been loving the Funkins, and the kids do too! They grab them when they need napkins at home as well as at school.
Thank you so much for offering such an informative video and blog post showing how easy it is to pack a litter free lunch, and why it is so important! Thank you for sharing the wonderful idea of how to encourage kids to wrap their fruit peels helping to eliminate extra messy clean-up in lunch bags. SO clever – we LOVE hearing how other moms teach their children clean-up tips, especially when it makes our jobs a little easier! We applaud you! ☺️
Thank you Funkins, this has been a fun campaign to work on! I’m constantly trying to make things easier for me – ha! So wrapping up old peels (using containers works too if the kids remember!) is just one way to make it easier at the end of the day.
Love your product!
