When Mom Central Canada said they were promoting a new book about Women’s heart health during Heart Month (February), I knew it was something I could easily get on board with.
I’ve often written about our attempt to eat healthy in my household. I cook with health in mind and after Andy was diagnosed with cancer, our awareness about our bodies and what we put in them (or at least the frequency, I certainly still have bad habits!) was front and centre.
But one thing both he and I agreed on is that we need to do more for our heart, in particular exercise. For years, we’ve been getting by on a small amount of exercise, mostly involving what the kids were doing, but now it’s time to dedicate time for our bodies.
That’s why I wrote the post about going to the gym. It’s not something I am loving, but I feel good after and know it has benefits.
Saving Women’s Hearts: How You Can Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease with Natural and Conventional Strategies is a book by Martha Gulati, MD, MS, FACC, FAHA and Sherry Torkos, BSc PHM.
The title caught my attention, not only because it deals with heart disease, the number one killer of women, but also that it includes natural ways to prevent and repair heart disease – through diet and exercise.
I’ve been browsing the book for a few days now and think it’s a great resource. It covers topics listed above in some detail. It has sections on exercise and how much we should be doing (based on age – which, FYI, I am not doing enough) and also diets, foods that are especially helpful etc (something that honestly we largely have been focusing on already).
Some of the book is technical of course, as it describes the circulatory system, blood system etc. But that’s ok. You will learn a lot, and the tips and highlights about how we can prevent heart disease are doable, and don’t seem unattainable.
Other highlights include the fact that the book gives high marks to coffee, chocolate (certain types) and wine.

I would like to read this book. Heart disease runs in my family. I haven’t given it as much thought as I should have when I was younger, so I need to start thinking about it. I think reading this book, would start me in the right direction,

I would love to read this book to learn what I can do to reduce my risk of developing heart disease.
Heart disease runs in my family and I am always thinking about (worrying about) it affecting me. Any resource that helps me prevent this would be amazing.
I find I get very “spurty” about my exercise. Very diligent for a few days, then not for a week, then diligent again. I don’t know that reading this book will improve my exercise (or for that matter, my eating habits!) but it dies sound interesting!
Both of my parents passed away with heart ailment. I want to know more about it and share it with my family as well.
