The show dates are September 15-16 with multiple shows per day.
There is an option for regular tickets OR VIP tickets.
This performance is fun for all ages, even better for 2 to 10 year old children, but best suited for 3 to 8 year olds.
VIP Meet & Greet description: VIP tickets include admission to a special meet and greet with Chris and Martin Kratt right after the show. Please note that each child attending the meet and greet must be accompanied by an adult, who must also have a VIP ticket.
The performance is 85 minutes total, which includes a 20 minute intermission.
During online school this year, my daughter’s teacher organized an online class musical. Parts were assigned, time was spent practicing the songs, and eventually they came together for an evening online Meet with parents to watch as the kids each performed from home, their individual lines (with a lot of muting and unmuting) and group songs.
It wasn’t a performance without glitches of course, but it was one filled with heart. For my daughter, who continues to show an interest in the dramatic arts, it has been an online school highlight.
It’s never been a secret that I love stage performances. Over the years on this blog, I’ve shared a lot of details about shows we attended, musical movies and television we love (um, speaking of, have you watched Julie and The Phantoms yet?) and I’ve partnered with organizations over the years to share with readers their upcoming events.
A former ad partner has returned this year, and I’m so please to share more details about the new summer season and their hybrid in-person and online workshop opportunity for kids aged 6-18 with The Academy for Musical Theatre.
About this summer’s workshop
While their summer programming usually includes day camps, The Academy for Musical Theatre is pivoting (along with so many others this year) to ensure a pandemic style musical theatre workshop experience combining online rehearsals (and community connection!) and a live season-finale performance at the Gladstone Theatre.
Of course, depending on circumstances in the City, and Covid guidelines, more changes or pivots may need to be made but they are putting care into creating a hybrid in-person and online workshop that kids will love.
Registration is open for two different age groups and experiences:
The All Ages Registration is for those who are wanting to participate and ready to learn, sing and grow! This is for ages 6-16.
The Advanced Teen Workshop is for ages 12-18 who may have previous musical theatre experience and are looking for a challenge!
This year’s workshop will take place from July 2 until August 14th. After an in-person or online Audition, lessons and rehearsals will take place weekly on Zoom, and include a all-cast rehearsal every Wednesday. At the end of the season, a live performance (if possible) will take place at the Gladstone Theatre in small groups.
Instructional videos where students can learn about blocking a scene, choreography, and at-home costume planning will also be available on demand to watch.
Here’s a bit about what you’ll receive when your child registers:
A special delivery package to your home
An in-person individual audition (with option for a video audition.)
Detailed audition feedback
A lead role in one section of the show, as well three chorus roles in the other three sections
Access to professional instructional videos
Live Zoom lessons and rehearsals
The Final Performance (with Covid-19 safety protocols in place)
A Professional Final Video
An epic outdoor end-of-summer Cast Party!
– From The Musical Academy for Musical Theatre website
And yes, there are auditions, but it’s not a ‘you are in or out’ type of audition. It’s one to offer feedback and create a true musical theatre experience!
What is the show about?
Here’s the fun part: The show this year is actually pieces of four different, popular movies and theatre shows that families will love. Musical performances and highlights from each show will be performed.
This includes: Hamilton, Frozen 2, The Greatest Showman, and Wicked.
How many of us have those soundtracks downloaded on our phones already and as a family have watched/listened to these songs?
You can visit the website to see which songs will be performed and all of the details about how your child will have a lead role in one of the performances, plus will participate in the all the others.
This summer is likely going to be somewhat different still for many of us. And as parents, it’s hard to imagine what it will all look like. But as we try to plan for some activities that our kids can really get lost in, and be creative and find something that they love that is new and exciting, this musical theatre workshop experience might be the perfect avenue for many families.

Tickets are now on sale for the amazing new season of music, dance, theatre and more at Meridian Theatres at Centrepointe.
I’ve been to the theatre quite a few times with my kids, Andy and with friends, in different capacities. Sometimes, I’ve had family-friendly show tickets given to me by the City to check it out, and other times I’ve bought tickets because there are so many events to attend as a family, date night, girls night out and more! It’s such a nice theatre.
The new line up for the 2019/2020 season is stacked with even more great shows!
The first one I have to tell you about is Llama Llama Live! On Stage!!! Yes, from the popular kids books. I expect this will be a hit with kids (and parents) so if you are interested, tickets are now available.
The Anne of Green Gables ballet will put a unique twist (and turn) on the story that so many Canadians know and love. This is a full-length ballet and an evening show so it may be more for older kiddos.
Another one to bookmark is Shaun Majumder! I would imagine this show will be perfect for date night! That’s coming up in February.
And while this is certainly not an exhaustive list, another series that really caught my attention is the ‘Tea with…’ series like the Tea with a side of Holly holiday performance or Tea with a Lump of Movies in 2020. Four classical musicians perform their interpretations on music you know and love, and tea and treats are served after the performance.
There are so many more shows coming up!
The entire 2019/2020 schedule is available online.
Wondering about the new season at Shenkman Arts Centre? I am too! But don’t worry, that information is coming in early June!

If your child has an interest in the stage, acting, music, dancing, performing and playing pretend, you’ll be happy to hear about The Academy for Musical Theatre and their upcoming camp theatre workshops.
Has the musical made a comeback in your home? Or maybe it next went away. Disney movies are traditionally filled with stories and plot that are narrated with song. And I know many have fallen in love with The Greatest Showman, but there is something about a musical on stage that gives me a completely different feeling.
The Academy for Musical Theatre continues to expand their offerings in Ottawa, with workshops in the summer plus after school programs in the fall and spring.
The Academy for Musical Theatre welcomes everyone to a fun training environment where novices and those wanting to dive deeper into musical stage shows can really get a handle for things. The camps and workshops welcome kids aged 6-17.
I love the variety of offerings in Ottawa (the workshops take place at the Gladstone Theatre, even though The Academy for Musical Theatre is headquartered in Perth) including The Lion King, Mary Poppins and 100 Years of Broadway.
Ottawa area students can spend part of their summer, for a week or two depending on the performance, immersed in musical theatre. From scripts, to practice and a final performance at the end of the workshop, the kids will have the entire experience.
While some workshops have already sold out, you’ll be happy to know that a few major opportunities to participate remain. Be sure to keep an eye out for the details about the length of the workshop (some are 2 weeks) and the specific dates each are being offered. With some sell outs already, I won’t be surprised if other sessions do as well so if you think your child is interested it might be time to register them!
Here’s a bit more information about The Academy for Musical Theatre that they sent me to give you an idea of their history and philosophy:
The Academy for Musical Theatre (formerly “Perth Academy of Musical Theatre”), founded in 1998 in Perth, Ontario, Canada, provides high quality instruction in music, acting, dance and various aspects of technical theatre to youths of all ages, culminating in the performance of a full-scale Broadway musical.
The Academy is a very special and unique community of non-judgmental and spirited individuals with positive attitudes, devoted to providing a fun and safe environment for us to experiment artistically without fear of negative feedback. Our primary mandate is to build confidence.
After 18 years of running a successful business in Perth, and seeing over 3,000 students develop their theatrical skills, as well as their confidence, we decided to share our company with a larger community, and in 2014 began offering programs in Ottawa, primarily at the Gladstone Theatre. In this, our 20th anniversary summer season, we are offering six musical theatre peformance workshops, including Mary Poppins,HMS Pinafore, The Lion King, and Jesus Christ Superstar.

Do you remember watching Babar on TV when you were a child? I remember watching Babar in afternoons, I think on weekends, when I was younger. I don’t remember a lot, just bits and pieces float in my mind featuring the characters. It wasn’t a show I sought out, and yet, it’s clearly a part of my childhood. Talk about a throw back!
If you have the same history, or if your child loves Babar and his adventures, you’ll be happy to hear that there is a musical stage show, The Story of Babar, coming to Shenkman Arts Centre on April 7 for two shows (one in English, one in French).
[Tweet “Get your tickets for The Story of Babar at @shenkmanarts on April 7 – and register your child for one of the special hands-on workshops too! via @bitofmomsense” #ottawa]
This show is recommended for children around age 3-7. There will be music and laughter and storytelling to ignite your child’s imagination. I also love that for an extra $5, you can stay for a post-show meet and greet with the actors and interact with what was on stage. There are two special 30-minute workshops; one focusing on music, the other on stage. Please note, parent supervision is required for both, and workshop registration needs to be made in advance of the show by calling 613-580-2700 or by visiting our box office in person. Tickets for the workshops are limited. Here’s the description for each of the workshops – they sounds hands-on and fun!
Babar in Music
Create a new Babar adventure and your own musical arrangement for the story! Drawing on composer Francis Poulenc’s music for The Story of Babar, the children will identify the funny sounds to be included in their new arrangement. They will select instruments to create sound effects and compose their own new storytelling arrangement. Babar on Stage
Challenge your imagination! As part of this workshop, the children will craft their own puppet versions of Babar, Celeste and Arthur or any other elephant character based on The Story of Babar concert. They will then have the chance to improvise actions and situations with their characters in a series of theatrical games.
Want to create your own memories with your kids about Babar?
Tickets are available for the two upcoming shows on April 7, and for the special workshops. Click the following links for your preferred show time, and to learn more about the musical presentation!

March Break in the Ottawa area is quickly approaching, and if you are struggling with booking a camp for the kids, it may be time to check out the Nepean Creative Arts Centre and the Nepean Visual Arts Centre. Having a creative outlet for their week of March Break might be the perfect way for the kids to try something new, express themselves and connect with new friends.
Below I’ve listed a few sessions that I think would appeal to kids of different ages (they are for kids aged 6-11, depending on the course). At the time of writing this, I selected classes that still had space left (some other sessions that looked really great are already full, so if you miss out for March Break, remember that there will be summer camps offered too!)
I love that each one is a bit different but still creative. Hands-on art programming, dance, and theatre (including musical theatre!) might be just what your child hoped to do during their break. Some camps are four days, others are for the entire five-day week.
Drawing, Painting and Sculpture – kids aged 6-9
“Explore your imagination through scultpure, drawing and painting. Let your creativity flow as you use different techniques and materials to learn advanced methods and explore new skills.”
“This unique style of dance incorporates hip-hop, breakdancing, pop’n lock, and freestyle. Master the dance moves from each style in a fun and energetic class.”
“Camp meets arts collective. Expand your dramatic skills by exploring character development, voice, movement and performance techniques – while giving theatrical expression to your ideas. Performance on the last day in the theatre.”
My friends at Centrepointe Theatre are welcoming families on January 6 to the Al Simmons show for some laughter and fun. This might be the perfect way to end your Christmas vacation in Ottawa together before the kids head back to school.
“Juno award-winning children’s musician, kooky comic, mad inventor and all-round wacky performer, Al Simmons entertains and enthralls. Known for his eccentric props and costumes, this Vaudevillian show thrills fans of all ages.” – Centrepointe Theatres
You can find details on the Centrepointe Theatres website and purchase your tickets. If grandma or grandpa are still looking for family gift ideas, this might be the experience for all of you to find under the tree!
Have you read the popular bedtime book “Guess How Much I love You?” to the kids? I have. We have the board book, of course.
It seems like ages ago now that we would cuddle up in pjs to read it. That’s one thing with the kids getting older, those short, sweet books that were read and re-read are tucked on the shelf. It stays there, and gets pulled out every so often for wee guests that we have, or just because my daughter enjoys going through the old books. It will always be on our shelf, until it’s on one of my own children’s shelves, in their own homes I suspect. It really is a lovely book.
Here’s our copy:
Mark your Calendars for November 25!
If you have little ones, and are still snuggling up on the couch or before bed to read Guess How Much I Love you and I Love My Little Storybook, you’ll be happy to know that there is a puppet performance coming to Shenkman Arts Centre!
Told through puppetry, with music, and presented by the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, this family friendly performance (recommended for ages 4-8) is actually two shows in one! It takes place on November 25 at 4 pm and is about 60 minutes long, plus there’s a Q and A!
Watch the Show, Stay for Pizza
As an added bonus, there is a pizza party planned after the performance! For $5 extra a ticket, you don’t have to rush home for supper. You can stick around and grab a slice of pizza, some salad, cupcake and drink. What a fun family event! Please note, pizza orders must be placed by calling 613-580-2787 before November 22.
I love when there are things from my childhood that suddenly re-enter my life. This is how I felt when I saw that Fred Penner is coming to Shenkman Arts Centre on April 22.
Did you watch Fred Penner’s Place when you were younger? My siblings and I often had it on! Music and that kind of kids’ show were a great way to hang out and relax. I can’t remember if it was on in the morning or after school, but I do remember watching it during the months when I didn’t have school. Go on YouTube and listen to the opening song. It all comes back!
I’m happy to share with you that Fred Penner is coming to Ottawa! The show is taking place on April 22 and I love that ahead of the 1 pm start time, there is an activity station that will be set up beginning at noon in partnership with the Ottawa School of Art. You child can bring a blank black t-shirt and screen print a special cat design. Remember the song The Cat Came Back? If you don’t bring a t-shirt stop by and it can be printed on paper.
The Orleans Young Players will also have a dress up photo booth set up so there’s a lot for families to take in before the show even begins!
January 30 is a PD Day for many kids in the Ottawa area. If you are home with them that day, you might be looking for something to do to keep them busy.
The Nepean Creative Arts Centre has a suggestion – head to the theatre for a Rag and Bone Puppet Theatre Performance! We’ve been to these performances before and always enjoy ourselves!
Beginning at 1:30 pm, the show, The Flying Canoe, is a family friendly performance that has magical creatures that will delight kids aged 4-11.
A talking cat…the devil at a dance …a bear in a canoe …magical creatures …A fantastic and fun introduction to the culture, music and language* of the first Francophones in Canada-the voyageurs, the loggers, the trappers and farm families-whose humour, imagination and courage helped found our very own community. Featuring puppets, early film footage, traditional songs & music. And lots of curriculum connections! The story of the Flying Canoe, La Chasse-Galerie, was first published in Canada in 1900 by Honoré Beaugrand. This well-known French Canadian tale is the centrepiece of our play about the myths, legends, and daily life in early French Canada. *mostly in English, with a soupçon of French. -Nepean Creative Arts Centre
Tickets are $10 each or $32 for 4. Tickets are available online or at the door.
