We have been back from Vacation for a few days and we had such an amazing time. If you followed me on Instagram, you probably already know about the mouth watering bites of food we had and all of the gorgeous weather gifted to us by PEI. It was hard saying goodbye, as it is most years.
And yet, I thrive on routine. I need a bit of a plan, a bit of consistency. Like a young child who should be napping at the same time every day, I am a creature of habit because it makes me healthier and reduces stress.
Now, there are exceptions. Travel and vacation seems to be a time when I can forget about the need for consistency and live in the moment. It’s completely different being on vacation – even vacations when I am checking email and writing artilces – than when we’re at home.
So we are back to routine, which is great on one hand – a more normal food schedule is probably not a bad idea, and I can’t sleep in forever, especially with school around the corner.
However, routine also sometimes can translate into rut, and that’s what I have to be most careful of now. We had an amazing vacation, no surprise, and things are busy around here with work and enjoying the last few weeks of summer, but I need to remind myself of how I felt when I took those quiet moments on the deck in PEI with my coffee, or when I decided to run around after the kids playing volleyball. Those moments can be captured here at home, even if they are buried behind a list of to-dos, household chores and obligations.
We’re determined to enjoy the last of the summer just as we enjoyed the beginning. Even if it means getting back into a routine.
Do you crave routine? Are you spontaneous? Do you like a healthy combination?
