I write a lot about our experience as a family attending live theatre performances, musical performances and dance shows with the kids. Sometimes, I have taken them on my own, while at other times we’ve gone as a family. I think there is something special about watching performing arts in person. While I am a huge fan of television and movies (and I know my kids enjoy them too!) it’s a completely different experience when we watch people perform live. With music and dance and theatre, there is always an emotional connection that is just out of reach with TV as a medium.
A Family Show to check out in Ottawa
Shenkman Arts Centre has a celebration of movement coming up called Angélie’s Shoes (Les souliers d’Angélie). There is little to no dialogue, and the performance is bilingual, but words aren’t always needed. Movement and dance on stage can often draw the attention of the kids.
If your child is a dancer themselves, I can see this being especially moving for them to watch performers on stage.
The performance is on October 14 in the Richcraft Theatre (I love this space) and is designed for children aged 5 and older. Tickets are available now and as the weekends fill up with activities and family commitments, taking time for a mini-date at the theatre with the kids sounds like a lovely Fall plan.
You can read more about the show on the Shenkman Arts Centre website (there’s also a video with a show preview), or their Facebook Event page.
If you do attend, I hope you have a wonderful time!
